Career Counselling

Marina Zarth

The Career Counselling is intended for individuals who are going through a career and work-related transition.

These transitions can be varied, but below are the most common ones I encounter with my clients:

  • Change of professional field;
  • Relocation to another country, resulting in professional role change;
  • Personal change leading to professional role change (such as the birth of a child or loss of a job);
  • Retirement;
  • Amongst others.

Career Counseling service is intended for those who are (re)thinking their careers and would like a professional to assist them in this process.

If you still have doubts about whether this service aligns with your needs, please contact me, and we can better understand it together.

Frequently asked questions

How do the sessions and the counselling process work?

I work with Career Counselling in a semi-structured process (8-12 sessions).

It is semi-structured because, despite having a predefined process, it allows for flexibility and collaboration between the client and the counsellor.

My role as a Career counsellor is not directive or diagnostic. My objective is to guide you through the process of self-awareness, help you expand and explore your options, support you in decision-making and planning and assist you in taking the next career steps that align better with the life you desire.

  • I usually work with weekly sessions with a duration of 1 hour.
  • The sessions are online.
  • My sessions are held in English or Portuguese.

What is your work methodology?

I understand that there are many doubts about the field and practice of Career Counselling. So, let me briefly explain it.

The practice of Career Counselling is an area of study within Psychology, that has its own methodologies and theories. I mainly use the Career Construction Theory - Life-Design paradigm. If you're interested, I can explain more about it to you.

It is an intersection area between Organisational, Clinical and Educational Psychology.

Considering that, there are several advantages of going through this process with a psychologist, due to our background and our deep understanding of human beings. Furthermore, we utilise evidence-based methodologies and techniques.

Although Career Counselling and Coaching are similar, they are not the same.

Career Counselling focuses on helping individuals gain self-awareness, explore possibilities, make assertive decisions, and deal with career-related challenges.

Coaching, on the other hand, tends to focus on setting goals, developing skills, and enhancing performance.
